Year Of Theatre

Français

1606 - 2006

Essence:

In November 1606, the history of theatre in Canada began with Marc Lescarbot’s The Theatre of Neptune in New France. It was the first written, first performed play in Canada and in continental North America north of the Spanish settlements in Mexico.

Theatre 400 will be a celebration and commemoration - with a sequence of projects to celebrate the 400th birthday of live theatre in Canada:

  1. “Year of Theatre”: a declaration by governments, arts/community groups, etc.
  2. Commemorative stamp: submitted in December 2004 to honour anniversary.
  3. Re-enactment of play - Port Royal/Halifax’s Dingle - summer and fall 2006.
  4. Documentary on the story of the play, the original and the re-enactment.
  5. Conference-symposium - major conference on Canadian theatre on its 400th anniversary - November 2006.

Goal:

To have Mathieu Da Costa portrayed as one of the acting party.

Legacy:

Highlight Canada’s multicultural roots.

Recommendation:

There will be up to forty actors involved, and based on the circumstantial evidence, Da Costa should be involved.
