Essence:
In November 1606, the history of theatre in Canada began with Marc Lescarbot’s The Theatre
of Neptune in New France. It was the first written, first performed play in Canada and in
continental North America north of the Spanish settlements in Mexico.

Theatre 400 will be a celebration and commemoration - with a sequence
of projects to celebrate the 400th birthday of live theatre in Canada:
- “Year of Theatre”: a declaration by governments, arts/community groups, etc.
- Commemorative stamp: submitted in December 2004 to honour anniversary.
- Re-enactment of play - Port Royal/Halifax’s Dingle - summer and fall 2006.
- Documentary on the story of the play, the original and the re-enactment.
- Conference-symposium - major conference on Canadian theatre on its 400th anniversary
- November 2006.

Goal:
To have Mathieu Da Costa portrayed as one of the acting party.
Legacy:
Highlight Canada’s multicultural roots.
Recommendation:
There will be up to forty actors involved, and based on the circumstantial evidence, Da Costa
should be involved.
