Underground Railroad Songs
|
Slaves on the run often sung songs of joy and resolve to
celebrate the end of a journey to freedom. But these
soulful melodies contained more than just comforting words,
they also provided a means of coded communication understood
only by those in the Underground Railroad.
Following are some musical code words:
Darkness and glory: places of refuge along the way
Darkness: closer to slavery
Glory: closer to freedom
River: safe route
